More than a century ago, German chemist Alfred Kopf worked tirelessly in developing a soothing ointment for the relief of nasal and skin ailments. After untold hours spent in mixing, testing and re-testing his product, at last Mr. Kopf was satisfied. In 1906, his product, "Boroleum® Ointment", would for the first time be marketed to consumers for the relief of skin ailments. Boroleum® would go on to become a huge success, becoming one of the first health-related products to win approval by the FDA (which itself had only been founded that same year).
Users far and wide took to Mr. Kopf's product, using Boroleum® Ointment for soothing relief of a wide variety of nasal and skin ailments including head colds, hay fever, skin irritations and the dreaded "nasal catarrh" (a fancy medical term for "runny nose"). Boroleum®'s mild, gentle formula proved to be incredibly effective in soothing redness, itchiness and soreness under the nose and nasal passages, as well as moisturizing and protecting chapped lips and other minor skin irritations.
Building on Mr. Kopf's early success, in 1919 Harold Sinclair established Sinclair Pharmacal Co. Inc. to produce Boroleum®'s patented formula in greater quantities and broaden distribution. For more than 30 years, Boroleum® would be produced in New York city, until the relocation of Sinclair Pharmacal's production facilities to Fishers Island, NY in 1951. In 1965, upon the passing of Sinclair Pharmacal founder Harold Sinclair, his wife Alice Sinclair, took over operations of the company in his stead, running the company until 1992, when Susie and Scudder Sinclair - the grandson of Sinclair Phamacal's founder - assumed control of the company.
More than a century (and millions of Boroleum® tubes) after its genesis, it's nice to know that some things never change: while our packaging may have been updated, users can rest assured in knowing that when they reach for Boroleum®, they'll find the same consistent, high-quality product that they knew as children. No doubt Mr. Kopf, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sinclair and the many other folks who've contributed to Boroleum®'s success through the years would be happy to know families nationwide still enjoy our fine product.
