Boroleum helps minimize nasal discomfort due to oxygen therapy

Boroleum® Minimizes Irritation Caused by Oxygen Therapy (OT) and Sleep Apnea Treatments

Millions of Americans rely on oxygen therapy as part of their physician-recommended health-care regimen. Oxygen therapy (also called "OT") involves the inhaled administration of oxygen, which increases oxygen supply to the lungs and thereby provides more oxygen to the bodily tissues. The oxygen is generally administered via a facemask or nasal cannula (specialized plastic "nasal tubes"), although there are a variety of different breathing apparatus on the market.

For patients suffering from sleep apnea a different sort of breathing device is used. Sleep apnea is a medical condition in which the patient's airway is intermittently blocked - usually by the soft tissues in the throat - during sleep. This blockage deprives the patient of air, and in some cases can cause the patient to stop breathing for as long as 30 seconds at a time - over and over throughout the night. This results in loud snoring, daytime fatigue and in severe cases, the condition can even be life threatening. The most common treatment for moderate to severe sleep apnea is using "continuous positive airway pressure", or "CPAP". The CPAP machine uses a mask that goes over your nose, or nose and mouth, gently blowing a continuous stream of air into your throat.

Both oxygen therapy and sleep apnea treatments provide a huge benefit to patients, resulting in increased oxygen levels and more comfortable living. However, the constant flow of air through the nose can also cause uncomfortable side effects such as a dry, stuffy nose and sore nasal passages, which in severe cases can cause nosebleeds. Alternately, some sufferers may experience an opposite reaction - their nose becoming irritated by the airflow and therefore runny or wet. Also, skin around the nose or mouth may suffer, becoming chaffed or irritated by constant contact with the air mask.

Over the years, we've received many letters from grateful patients who rely upon Boroleum® to make oxygen therapy more comfortable - some even calling Boroleum® Ointment a "must-have" item during respiratory therapy. Boroleum®'s active ingredients gently soften and soothe dry nasal passages, while also moisturizing and protecting irritated facial skin. In short, Boroleum® Ointment provides exactly the type of relief you - or your loved one - needs in order to get the most out of respiratory therapy.

Tips for Better Breathing

Millions of Americans undergo oxygen therapy of one sort or another during their lifetime. Consider the following tips that help promote better respiratory health.*

  • Set a goal of getting some exercise* each day: even a brief walk or simple sitting stretches may be beneficial to the cardiovascular system.
  • Many oxygen therapy patients require their treatments due to illness caused by smoking. If you are a smoker, consult your doctor for tips or strategies on quitting.
  • If you are a non-smoker, try to avoid breathing second-hand cigarette smoke.
  • If you have asthma or other respiratory problems, avoid spending time outdoors during peak traffic hours, especially if you live in an area with heavy smog, dust or pollutants.
  • Get a flu shot to prevent influenza*, which affects the respiratory system.
  • Eat a healthy diet, including plenty of fruits and vegetables which contain beneficial vitamins and minerals.
  • Use a dehumidifier to minimize growth of mold and mildew.
